Bird 3: Common or Northern Red-Shafted Flicker:
S ometimes
known as the "ant-eater of the bird world", the
Northern
Flicker is part of the woodpecker family. The red-shafted flicker found
around the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, BC, has cinnamon-coloured head
and the male shows a red moustache. There is a broad black band of feathers
across the top of their breast, which is speckled with black. The rare time
there is a red crescent on the back of it's head. coloration on the
underside of the wing and tail feathers,
evident
when seen flying, reflects the different names of the Northern Flicker: the
focal Red shafted flicker shows bright salmon pink (or some think more
orange), whereas the eastern bird definitely has yellow feathers. A
beautiful bird. |
